Dust is a source of energy in Remnant. The physical properties of Dust make it incredibly useful for a variety of purposes, particularly in combat. The name “Dust” is a reference to the primordial state from which mankind was born. It is sometimes referred to as “Nature’s Wrath” or as an energy propellant.

According to ancient legends, humanity discovered and harnessed a source of power that they named “Dust” during a losing struggle against the Grimm, allowing them to turn the tide of the war. After mankind drove back the Grimm and built civilizations, Dust became an integral part of everyday life in Remnant. Despite its widespread use and prevalence, humanity has yet to understand the origins of Dust or the implications of their involvement with it.

Dust is a naturally occurring energy propellant triggered by the aura of humans and faunus. Dust does not function outside the atmosphere of Remnant, preventing space flight. Dust can be found in either crystallized or powdered forms, both of which are extremely volatile, and it can be found in four basic types; however, these four types can be combined either artificially or naturally to form new types of Dust, each with their own colors and properties.

Types of Dust:

Dust serves as a power source for almost all techology in Remnant, from airships to androids. Other alternative forms of energy do exist, but Dust is by far the most common. Technology powered by Dust is known to glow.

In combat, Dust can be harnessed in a variety of ways, but in its raw form, it requires both an Aura and the intelligence to use it effectively, making humans, faunus, and certain artificial beings (currently only Penny Polendina known), the only ones to use it.

Dust bullets also exist, however, and they are much simpler to use. Such rounds come in several different sizes and cartridges to be outfitted for a number of weapons. This form is the most common and easiest way to use Dust in battle, but in can be used in its raw form with a certain level of discipline to maintain control. It is described as “elegant, yet destructive” and can be wielded by weaving it into clothing, implanting it in the wielder’s body, or by building a weapon specifically meant to channel raw Dust.
