“There’s too much wrong in this world to just stand by and do nothing. Inequality, corruption… Someone has to stop it.”

Blake is one of the main protagonists and a member of Team RWBY. Her weapon is a Variant Ballistic Chain Scythe (VBCS) called Gambol Shroud. Gambol Shroud has a sharpened sheath that can be dual-wielded with the blade within, which can also transform into a gun and has a ribbon-like chain at the end of it so that Blake can throw it and reel it back in. Her semblance makes a copy of herself. These clones can be used to either distract, shield, or hide herself from the enemy for a brief amount of time. The clones can be combined with Dust to imbue them with elemental properties; it is unknown how long a shadow copy can appear for or how far away from Blake they can exist. Blake is secretly a cat faunus, and she wears a black ribbon tied in a bow on her head to hide her cat ears. Notably, she removes this ribbon during season four when she returns home. Blake enrolled in Beacon Academy after leaving her position in the White Fang terrorist group, where she became a member of Team RWBY with Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, and Yang Xiao Long.

Blake displays a cool, reserved, and serious personality, but she doesn’t lack humor. She is a righteous person with respect for other people’s lives, borne from her growing up as a faunus and learning firsthand how prejudice affects a person. She strongly despises those who judge and discriminate, and she is not afraid to speak her mind to protect her beliefs. She holds strong ideals and will not see those ideals compromised by anyone, even those she is close to; this doesn’t mean that she’s closed-minded, but she has informed opinions she will not allow to be swayed for the purpose of an easier life or to diffuse an uncomfortable situation.

Blake is an introvert who prefers to be alone rather than socialize. She usually excludes herself from conversations and is easily engrossed in books, which she is rather fond of. As the season continues, she grows more friendly, but remains quiet. When she does speak, she possesses a dry wit and is often sarcastic. She’s most conversant when discussing the history and plight of faunus. Blake hides her faunus heritage while she attends Beacon and is terrified of people learning she is a faunus. Very few people know the truth as she hides her ears with her ribbon. However, she still insists on defending faunus, and while she has no hatred for humans, she wonders how she can undo so many years of hate and pain.

Despite being a former member of the White Fang, Blake strongly disagrees with the level of violence and hatred they’ve exhibited towards humans. She abandoned the organization and her former boyfriend due to this, and she sees the group as heavily misguided. While she is skeptical of the possibility of attaining a righteous world, she wants to seek justice in a way that won’t cause innocent people more pain than the faunus have already suffered so far.

The White Fang is one of her main concerns, and she feels it is her responsibility to monitor its activity and possible alignment with their enemies given her former membership. She recruits Team RWBY to investigate their activities, as they are the people she trusts the most at Beacon. However, due to her past, Blake is a very suspicious and untrusting person, and sometimes finds it difficult to trust even her own teammates.
